Apple introduced the Vision Pro mixed reality headset globally in January 2024. Adoption by consumers remained limited, driven by a developer focus and a premium price tag.
In a July report, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman confirmed that Apple is developing a follow-up Vision Pro headset. The next model will run on Apple’s new M4 system-on-chip, which integrates an upgraded CPU, GPU and an expanded Neural Engine.
The M4 Neural Engine under test reportedly exceeds 16 cores, a first for Apple silicon outside of Ultra-tier devices. Early trials suggest the new SoC will deliver faster compute, smoother multitasking and more efficient AI functions within visionOS.
Apple engineers are also evaluating revised head straps to improve wearability. Early feedback on the original Vision Pro criticized the standard band for long-term comfort and fit.
According to Gurman, Apple aims to ship the updated Vision Pro before year-end. The company also plans smart glasses akin to Meta’s Ray-Ban models. A third-generation Vision Pro, featuring a lighter build and major hardware updates, is expected to follow in 2027.
